Our pick of the best places to sleep in the WA capital.

1. FOR A SENSE OF ZEN

COMO The Treasury: This hotel's 48 rooms may occupy a heritage 1875 building that is a textbook example of French Second Empire style, but design inside is marked by COMO's signature clean lines - think wood and stone, and earthy hues courtesy of the late Kerry Hill.

It's a serene cocoon that instantly slows your pulse. The Zen vibes continue in the COMO Shambhala Urban Escape, a wellness hub dedicated to hands-on holistic treatments with a focus on Eastern rituals. From $766 per room, per night; comohotels.com

2. FOR RIVER VIEWS

The Ritz-Carlton, Perth: Smack bang on the Swan River in the city's Elizabeth Quay precinct, the Ritz is like a celebration of Western Australia, from the Kimberley sandstone used in its dramatic lobby to the external pink-hued glass representing Argyle diamonds once mined in the north of the state. Works and craftsmanship from WA creatives also adorn rooms and public spaces, while Hearth restaurant heroes local produce on its menus. From $549 per room, per night; ritzcarlton.com

3. FOR ART LOVERS

The Adnate Perth - Art Series: Australian street artist Matt Adnate shook a fair few spray cans to create the 25-storey portrait of Whadjuk Noongar man Nathan McGuire that decorates the exterior of this hotel. Step inside, and 650 giclee prints and original canvases of Adnate's most-recognised works weave their way throughout.

There's more colour in the experiences on offer: libraries stocked with glossy design tomes; a pastel-popped pool, bar and restaurant; and in-room art channels. From $225 per room, per night; all.accor.com

4. FOR FOODIES

Crown Towers Perth: Set on a peninsula jutting into the Swan River, 15 minutes from the heart of Perth, this hotel is the flagship in the Crown entertainment precinct, which also counts the Metropol and Promenade among its stable. Across the three lodgings there are more than a dozen restaurants and bars - when you're finished dining, stroll back to sleek rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows framing Perth's skyline, or enjoy the same vista from the pool. From $349 per room, per night; crownhotels.com.au

5. FOR DESIGNER DIGS

QT Perth: Uniting signature QT whimsy and style in equal measure, this Perth outlet of the QT hotel brand features industrial-chic swagger, from the local jarrah timber walls to the polished brass and jewel-toned velvet sofas. In rooms, meanwhile, there's cockatoo-print wallpaper and wildflower murals - you won't forget where you are.

There's no reason to leave thanks to four on-site restaurants and bars, including upscale Italian diner Santini and the ravishing rooftop bar, the highest of its kind in town. From $251 per room, per night; qthotels.com

6. FOR A CENTRAL LOCATION

The Melbourne Hotel: Self described as "the old kid on the block", The Melbourne has a story that dates back to 1897 - and it celebrates this history through exposed original walls, grand staircases, arched windows and Juliet balconies in some rooms (choose from Heritage and Contemporary). Step out and you're in the heart of the city, with a parade of restaurants on your doorstep. Stay in and you can savour Cantonese flavours at Grant Orient or slurp ramen at Keisuke Tonkatsu King. From $251 per room, per night; melbournehotel.com.au

7. FOR OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS

Tribe Perth Kings Park: Check in here and you have one of the world's largest and most beautiful inner-city garden on your doorstep, and many rooms offer a glimpse of the botanical bounty. Some of Australia's leading designers were called in to fit out spaces, replete with plush velvet sofas, offbeat armchairs and lighting.

It's an easy walk into the CBD for meetings, but the hotel also comes with a dedicated co-working space, kitted out with 10 individual offices and window-side desks. And come knock-off time, it's connected directly to HQ Bar + Restaurant, so you don't have to travel far to reward yourself for a job well done. From $210 per room, per night; quayperth.com
