Hotel Review: SIRO One Za'abeel

Where: Zaa'beel Street, Za'abeel 1, Dubai

How much: From 500 euros ($829) a night

THE BACKSTORY

Not just another new hotel opening, SIRO One Za'abeel is the first "fitness and recovery hotel" in the world. The SIRO brand - another property will open shortly in Montenegro - will target travellers who are interested in fitness and wellness, with every aspect of the hotel built around the five pillars of fitness, nutrition, sleep, recovery and mindfulness. If you are heading to Dubai for business or pleasure and you want to look after your body while you are here, SIRO One Za'abeel is the place to do it.

THE SETTING

Just 15 minutes from the airport, the One Za'abeel district is close to the Dubai World Trade Centre, the Dubai International Financial Centre and Downtown Dubai.

The striking high-rise tower that houses SIRO is also home to a new hotel by sister brand One & Only, as well as a dining precinct called The Link, which houses a phenomenal array of outstanding restaurants by acclaimed chefs such as Spain's Paco Morales and our own Tetsuya Wakuda.

THE STYLE

SIRO's lobby on the 30th floor feels more like a high-end gym than a hotel, complete with techno soundtrack, displays of sportswear and protein powders, a smoothie station and athleisure-clad staff who will offer you a welcome shot of watermelon juice and a protein ball.

Don't be surprised if some of your fellow guests are also in workout gear: they will have come from a session in the fitness areas, which are on the same floor.

THE ROOMS

At first glance, the rooms are serene sanctuaries featuring earthy tones, organic shapes and textured rugs with plenty of space to move - entry-level rooms start at a generous 50 square metres. In fact, these rooms double as workout spaces, too: there are gymnastic wall bars, stretching equipment including bands, blocks and mats, and a selection of 12 Technogym stretching and balancing programs to screen.

The beds are fantastically comfortable - remember, sleep is a key pillar - and the mini-bar is packed with nutritious options. My sprawling Recovery Suite has its own massage room; the Fitness Suites comes with their own personal gym.

THE FOOD

The hotel doesn't have its own restaurant but with so many outstanding restaurants in the building, it doesn't have to. For breakfast, head downstairs to One & Only's Aelia restaurant, or you can order in. Room service here has a very different spin, right down to the nutritional breakdown for each dish. I love the fact that you don't need to order the night before: when I call up and request coffee, juice and a green shakshuka, it arrives in less than 30 minutes, delivered not on an old-school trolley, but in a paper bag like UberEats. Another funky option: the bespoke vending machine in the lobby offers snacks such as chia pudding and a smoked salmon baguette.

THE ACTION

A quick visit to the gym has never looked so good. One thousand square metres of floor space is dedicated to fitness and recovery, including serious workout spaces (you can gaze out at the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, as you sweat it out), separate studios for spin, yoga and Pilates, and plenty of group classes.

If the gym isn't enough to keep you busy, head for the gorgeous oasis-style pool on the fourth floor, or take yourself up to the Recovery Lab where they offer a range of treatments, from cryotherapy to IV therapy, vibroacoustic therapy to assisted stretching.

UNFORGETTABLE

Every guest gets a free meeting with the in-house nutritionist.
