Best for: Wander along the narrow streets to Place de l'Horloge, the central square adorned with balconies, elegant facades and shady trees. Visit the Palace of the Popes, the largest Gothic building from the Middle Ages. Travel through the picturesque countryside of Provence, stopping at the Lavender Museum in Coustellet. Visit world famous wineries in the region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape where you'll meet vintners whose families have tended these vineyards for generations.
Best time to visit: From June to September, the weather is perfect for exploring Avignon's museums, ancient churches and the vibrant life in Avignon's lanes or canoeing and visiting the lavender fields.
