Design let-downs

Having travelled all over the world, we have stayed in all sorts of accommodations, but the thing that annoys us most is either no hooks or not enough hooks or railings to hang clean and used clothes in the bathroom. It means draping things on the basin or on the closed toilet. Swanky hotels are as bad as any. One other annoyance is lift buttons that are too low or difficult to read because of the trendy silver-on-silver or black-on-black design. Lis Hoorweg, Campbell, Canberra

Pillow fight

I don't like hotel rooms with big, hard, pillows that look (and feel) like gigantic footballs. It's impossible to sleep with your head on one of these. So I have devised a plan that usually solves the problem. Ask housekeeping to give me a smaller, flatter pillow. If that fails, out come the small scissors, needle and white thread. I remove the pillow stuffing until a happy medium has been reached, and sew the pillow carefully together again. What to do with the excess? Into the laundry bag from the wardrobe, quietly down the stairs and into the nearest street bin. Bingo. Happy sleep! I've done this in locations as far apart as New York and Uluru. The really difficult one was the New York hotel that had feather pillows. The bathroom looked like I'd murdered a chook, but a bit of intense cleaning and all was well. Sue Lee-Archer, Launceston, Tasmania

Storage solutions

I think there should always be space provided for two bags, so they can be stored flat and easily opened; enough cupboard space to hang clothing; and enough towel-rail space to hang two wet towels separately - not squashed together on one small rail or on useless hooks. Rooms without views should never be an option in an expensive hotel, and if you're offering a "view of the sea", your guests shouldn't have to stand on the bed to see it. Sue Skurr, Deakin, ACT

Armchair warrior

My pet peeve is that almost every hotel only provides one armchair or desk chair. That's fine if you're travelling by yourself, but most times you are travelling with another person, like your partner. It would be great to have two nice armchairs or a small sofa. If you are by yourself you can put your legs up. Mark Waite, Ballarat, Victoria

Rack your brains

In just about any hotel or motel, of whatever quality or rating, in a double room, intended to accommodate two people (or maybe three), there is always only one suitcase rack. Why? Oliver Raymond, Mawson, ACT

GST add-ons

We recently stayed at a respectable five-star hotel in Melbourne, where we were initially charged an $80 car-parking fee, despite the room rate clearly stating that valet car parking was included. Then, upon closer examination of the invoice, we discovered that we had been charged GST on items that are exempt from GST. Finally, to make matters worse, we were charged GST on the total amount on top of the GST already applied to some items. Then, to cap it off, we were charged GST on the surcharge fee applied to the credit card that had been applied to the total bill. Needless to say, we were not happy. Geoffrey Medley, East Gippsland, Victoria

Small print

My pet peeve is the small print on shampoo, conditioner or bath gels - whether they are on the wall or in small tubes. When you finally get the shower working, you then have to get out and find your specs. Peter Davies, Launceston, Tasmania

Workplace complaints

I am not a big fan of rooms that do not have adequate work spaces, including a desk space, accessible power points for the laptop and other equipment, and a good desk lamp/lighting. Greg Fraser, Lyneham, ACT
