As reality survival television series Alone Australia prepares to plunge ten new contestants into the brutal, subzero temperatures of the Arctic Circle, viewers are gearing up for a masterclass in endurance.

But long before facing the relentless Arctic darkness, three standout participants were earning their stripes in the Australian bush.

These explorers don't just travel through the wilderness, they help others experience it as adventure guides, tourism experts and community educators.

Alyce, an Aboriginal Community Engagement Senior Advisor in Western Australia, brings a blend of scientific precision and outdoor endurance to the upcoming season of Alone Australia.

When she isn't training for the total isolation of the wild, she is busy running her own business guiding rookies through some of the country's most demanding terrain.

For travellers seeking their own escape, Alyce recommends Western Australia's John Forrest National Park, particularly during the Noongar season of Makuru.

"The waterfalls are starting to flow, the creeks are gushing, and the bush comes alive. Think towering gum trees, grass trees, wildflowers and the beautiful calls of red-tailed black cockatoos," she said.

For those seeking a challenge, she recommends a solo hike of the 1000-kilometre Bibbulmun Track, a trip she describes as "physically demanding, but it was also one of the most spiritually rewarding experiences I've had".

But for Alyce, it's hard to beat her former stomping ground, the Wollongong coastline, with its "beautiful uncrowded beaches, ocean pools, coastal walks and the escarpment all in one place".

Lillian, a Swedish-born outdoor guide based in the Northern Territory, brings a formidable combination of Arctic resilience and elite wilderness expertise to the upcoming season of Alone Australia.

When she isn't leading remote tours across two hemispheres, the former Queen's Scout is busy navigating extreme high-altitude trails and sub-zero conditions.

For travellers seeking an escape from the daily grind, Lillian said it's hard to go past Central Australia.

"What I love most about the desert is how much life there is out there," she said.

"It's so easy to completely switch off, slow down, and feel grounded again. The sunsets are unforgettable, and once the stars come out, the night sky is honestly one of the most incredible things you'll ever see."

But for a true hidden gem, Lillian recommends the Pound Walk in Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park.

"The trail winds through towering red cliffs, hopping along dry, rocky creek beds," she said.

"One of the highlights is finishing at Ormiston Gorge, where you wade through cold (pretty damn cold) water if you choose the more adventurous route."

Misty

Misty, a Victorian-based adventure tour guide, brings her mastery of bushcraft and traditional survival skills to the upcoming season of Alone Australia.

Inspired by her Wulli Wulli heritage, she has spent her adult life studying the land and leading others through the wilderness.

She said Central Australia is home to many of her favourite spots, with its "ancient red rocks and silhouettes of oak trees praying for the rain".

"And nothing beats when the rain does come, petrichor; the smell of earth quenching its thirst is so strong out here in the semi-arid heart of Australia. Honestly, a place to breathe," she said.

For a true challenge, she recommends trekking up the Northern Territory's tallest peak, Urlatherrke (Mount Zeil).

"Learning to read the land and find my way to the peak was such an incredible feeling," she said.

But for an accessible hidden gem, Misty loves heading to Minthukundi in Western Australia.

"The geology there looks like God painted it himself," she said.

Alone Australia premieres July 15 on SBS and SBS On Demand.
