Well, it's possible now, thanks to low-cost airline Vietjet, which is launching direct flights between Sydney and the Vietnamese capital from April 12.

We road-tested the website and we have to admit: it's not the best UX. But it's a small price to pay when you could be saving hundreds of dollars. The basic fare (above) will simply get you there and back. But we suggest spending a little more (about $70) and you will get 40 kilograms of checked baggage allowance, food and beverages, along with the ability to choose your seats and flexibility with change of flights.

Once there, check into Hotel des Arts Saigon with stunning French and Indochine influences. Its rooftop bar, Social Club, offers sweeping city views and is the place to be come sunset. Just don't forget to set some time aside to meander by the nearby Saigon River to really soak up a slice of every Ho Chi Ming City life.
