Australia's best stays revealed: 22 local hotels join the 2026 Michelin Key list

Just seven months after opening, a restored Southern Highlands estate has been crowned as international accommodation royalty, with 21 other Australian hotels and resorts joining the ranks.

The 2026 Michelin Key list adds 22 new Australian hotels to the guide, taking our national tally to 54.

The Michelin Key guide is the hotel world's answer to Michelin Stars, awarding new Keys to nearly 500 accommodation providers worldwide with 80 others earning a step up in the global rankings in 2026.

Ardour Milton Park in the Southern Highlands town of Bowral earned a Key after an extensive renovation, but despite the design upgrade, chief executive Tash Tobias said the accolade belonged to the staff.

"This recognition belongs to the people in our hotels," Ms Tobias said.

"Their passion for hospitality and the way they bring each property to life is what makes these experiences truly special."

Australia now boasts three top-tier retreats, as Southern Ocean Lodge and Saffire Freycinet join Lizard Island Resort with three Michelin Keys.

Across the world, 18 new hotels earned this luxury distinction in 2026, joining an international list of just 155 hotels with three Keys.

The Michelin Key guide is entering its third year in 2026, with inspectors anonymously assessing hotels for design, service and character.

In the two-Key category, nine accommodation providers in Australia received the nod from Michelin.

The guide's international director Gwendal Poullennec said the diversity of featured accommodation showed that hoteliers were pushing creative boundaries.

"All around the world, hoteliers are reinventing the stay experience through more immersive, personalised and experiential concepts," he said.

Recognised as a "very special stay", 21 newly-awarded Australian properties joined the list of one-Key accommodation in 2026.

For Ardour Milton Park, earning a Michelin Key gives the freshly-renovated estate international credibility.

General Manager David McDonald said the award was a proud moment for the team behind the relaunch.

"To receive a MICHELIN Key just seven months in means a great deal to everyone who has worked to bring this property back to life," Mr McDonald said.

"It reflects the care that's gone into every part of the guest experience, from the rooms to the restaurants to the gardens, and puts Ardour on the global stage right from the start.

"We're incredibly proud of what the team has achieved in such a short time."
