Technically speaking, the Islands of Tahiti aren't that far - Australians can easily fly from the country's east coast to Papeete via Auckland with Air Tahiti Nui or Air New Zealand. But many Tahitian resorts can be prohibitively expensive. The newly opened Niu Beach Hotel, however, is aiming to make the destination more pocket-friendly. Located on the island of Moorea - a 40-minute ferry ride from Papeete - the resort is home to 16 beachside bungalows perfect for families.

Rates, for instance, for the entry-level bungalows - which can accommodate up to four people and come with fully equipped kitchens, spacious living rooms with a convertible sofas, and private terraces - start from $481 a night. For more space, there's a two-storey, two-bedroom bungalow, too. An onsite restaurant, a world-class spa where you can enjoy a traditional Polynesian massage called Taurumi and easy access to water-based adventures complete the picture. niubeachmoorea.com
