Spectacular southern lights have graced different parts of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania over the past few weeks, but it is the northern lights that are the most sought after bucket-list experience, according to a new report from Expedia. More than half of Australians (or 57 per cent) are keen to witness the aurora borealis during the upcoming northern winter season, the report found, with Lapland in Finland, Churchill in Canada, Narvik in Norway, Kalfafell in Iceland, Abisko in Sweden and Isle of Skye in Scotland appearing on the list of top trending locations.

To make it easier for travellers to witness one of Mother Nature's most elusive phenomena, Expedia has just launched The Northern Lights: Your Ultimate Guide, with tips on where to go, when to go, how to save money and - most importantly - how to capture them on your camera. And with experts predicting extraordinary aurora visibility in 2024-25, the guide couldn't have come at a better time. expedia.com/magazine/northern-lights
