From margaritas to elf dogs, this city's Santa run is unmissable fun

More than 40,000 Santas have taken part in the event's 13-year history.

San Diego is known for its delicious Mexican food, Top Gun, the iconic San Diego Zoo and Anchorman, to name a few. Come Christmas time, like everywhere else in the United States, people gather with their community and the people they love, but for the residents of San Diego, it's also the opportunity to don a Santa costume. The San Diego Santa Run has become synonymous with the holidays, typically held two weeks before Christmas.

Wearing a three-piece Santa costume - or a Christmas get-up of their choice - participants walk or run five kilometres around the streets of Pacific Beach. More than 40,000 Santas have taken part in the event's 13-year history, and the jolly atmosphere is infectious with speakers blasting Christmas tunes, dogs wearing tiny elf outfits and onlookers indulging in margaritas - which is exactly what I was doing as my partner, in all his Santa glory, raced past me - all before 10 o'clock in the morning.
